What was it like to be paddled in school?

Did you ever witness or watch someone get paddled? What was the procedure? What did the child do? How did they hold the paddle? My girlfriend just told me she was paddled in sixth grade back in the seventies and I was just curious how they done it. She talked like it was pretty painful
